Generally well tolerated. Rare but possible side effects:
Nutritional deficiency: 5–10 mcg (200–400 IU) daily.
Osteoporosis (prevention/treatment, >50 years): 800–1000 IU (20–25 mcg) daily, usually with calcium.
Hypoparathyroidism: 50,000–200,000 IU daily with calcium; IM administration is also an option.
0–12 months: 400 IU (10 mcg) daily.
1–18 years: 600 IU (15 mcg) daily.
Vitamin D–resistant rickets: 12,000–500,000 IU daily.
Familial hypophosphatemia: 40,000–80,000 IU daily with phosphate supplements; dose may be adjusted after growth is complete.
Can be taken orally or via intramuscular (IM) injection.
May be taken with or without food.
Patients with high calcium or phosphate levels.
Note: Adequate calcium and magnesium intake is crucial. Deficiency may activate parathyroid hormone (PTH), leading to calcium mobilization from bones.
